Junior forward Katy Scherer’s two goals propelled the St. Thomas women’s soccer team to a 6-0 victory over St. Mary’s University Wednesday, Sept. 12 at South Campus field.
After losing to Wartburg College last week, the Tommies (2-2 overall, 1-0 MIAC) looked to bounce back in the conference opener for both squads.
The scoring began early when Scherer scored on a pass from sophomore midfielder Taylor Sabrowski in the 10th minute.
Sabrowski and sophomore defender Kelsie Sargent each netted goals in the first twelve minutes, giving the Tommies a 3-0 advantage. Sabrowski finished the game with a goal and an assist.
The Tommies went on to score three more goals, outshooting the Cardinals 17-2.
In her sixth season at St. Thomas, coach Sheila McGill was happy with her team’s execution.
“Throughout the last week, we’ve been working on possession and finishing,” McGill said. “Today it really came together and our team was able to put the ball in the back of the net.”
St. Thomas attacked for the majority of the game and moved the ball well around the field.
Senior midfielder Annamarie Strehlow said she thought the team played its best game this season.
“We really moved the ball well and used each other to get open on offense,” Strehlow said. “It was a complete team effort.”
The Tommies travel to Decorah, Iowa Friday to battle Luther College (1-2).
“We always look forward to playing teams outside of the MIAC conference, it gives us a good look at some different competition,” Scherer said.
