DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — A 26-year-old Kenyan runner has set a record at Grandma’s Marathon, beating the previous mark by 31 seconds.

A Minneapolis Star Tribune report says Dominic Ondoro finished in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 6 seconds. He beat second-place finisher Christopher Kipyego by 2 minutes, 51 seconds.

More than 7,400 runners participated in Saturday’s race. The course winds from Two Harbors to Duluth.

Ondoro made his move around the 19-mile mark, breaking away from a pack of runners who’d been trading the lead.

Among the spectators was Dick Beardsley, who set the previous record in 1981. Beardsley hugged and congratulated Ondoro shortly after he crossed the finish line.

Kenyan Pasca Myers won the women’s race in a personal-best 2:33:43.
