Travel alert issued to study abroad students

St. Thomas students currently studying abroad, as well as those departing in January, received an email from St. Thomas’ Office of Study Abroad Wednesday informing them of a U.S. Department of State Travel Alert.

The worldwide alert warns of the potential for terrorist attacks in multiple regions. It reads, in part:

“Current information suggests that ISIL (aka Da’esh), al-Qa’ida, Boko Haram, and other terrorist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics, using conventional and non-conventional weapons and targeting both official and private interests.”

The alert does not discourage travel or recommend that travelers return home.

The email assured students that Study Abroad is monitoring the situation and collaborating with partners to ensure the safety of students.

The university is not cancelling any study abroad programs.
