An unexpected guest came to St. Thomas Wednesday, as Sal’s Food Truck stopped by on Summit Avenue for the first time.
Owner Mike Salvatore and the Italian food truck are new to the streets but plan to make St. Thomas a regular stopping place.
“This is the third day I’ve been out on the street, and it’s been excellent so far,” Salvatore said. “I have ties (to St. Thomas). My wife works here, and I participate quite a bit here in student affairs, volunteering for different events and helping security for football games.”
Salvatore plans on making the St. Thomas stop frequently, possibly coming two to three days a week and spicing up the menu each day.
“I’m going to have an Italian pasta special every day – that’s going to be different. I make a mean turkey meatball,” Salvatore said.
Pat Quale, a physical plant administrator, said she enjoyed the food.
“I had the meatball sliders. They were excellent – absolutely wonderful. I shared them with people in my office and everyone was asking where I could get them,” Quale said. “I would definitely try other items on the menu.”
The quality of the food is something Salvatore said he takes great pride in.
“Everything here is all homemade. It’s like going to a five-star restaurant,” Salvatore said. “My sausage is made in Chicago for me and shipped here.”
Sophomore Meghan Petersen said that having more food options on campus is a good idea.
“I think it’s a great idea to have more options than just the food on campus,” Petersen said. “I don’t carry cash or my purse with me to class, so I would want to know in advance when the food trucks would be here so that I can keep that in mind and bring cash with me to class.”
