A winter storm caused havoc this weekend throughout the Midwest, which dumped up to a foot of snow in some places in southern Minnesota.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation closed many highways in the southern part of the state due to drifting snow and whiteout conditions. The Minnesota State Patrol reported 165 crashes, seven semi-truck jackknifes and 404 spin outs on Minnesota roadways Sunday.
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport reported three and a half inches of snow and a peak wind gust of 43 mph over the weekend. Both St. Paul and Minneapolis declared snow emergencies Sunday.
“Green Book” won best picture in an upset at the 91st Academy Awards Sunday. The film also won best supporting actor for Mahershala Ali and best original screenplay.
Other awards included Olivia Colman for best actress for her role in “The Favourite” and Rami Malek won best actor for his role in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which won four awards despite pans from many critics and sexual assault allegations against its director, Bryan Singer.
Governor Tim Walz is condemning comments by a Republican state lawmaker who said supporters need to be, “kicked to the curb and stomped on and run over.”
Rep. Carl Bahr of East Bethel made his remarks during a capitol rally at the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus. That rally came as the house this week is expected to consider bills including universal background checks for gun buyers.
Walz responded Sunday with a statement calling Bahr’s comments, “unacceptable.”
