The St. Thomas men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams participated in the national championship last week, both placing below the Emory University men and women, who swept the competition in Shenandoah, Texas, becoming the second institution in Division III history to accomplish the feat.
The Emory women earned their eighth consecutive national championship sweeping all five relays, four of which broke NCAA records, and winning four individual events.
The men on the other hand won the program’s first ever title behind Andrew Wilson’s historic three-for-three nationals run. He shattered records in all three of his races.
St. Thomas senior Emma Paulson placed second in the 200 yard women’s backstroke Saturday with a final time of 1;58.61 finishing three seconds behind Olivia Jackson and .01 seconds before Cindy Cheng.
Paulson also finished third in the 100 yard backstroke and the 50 yard freestyle final. She was the reigning national champion for both the 100 and 200 yard backstroke.
The Tommie women placed 14th in team rankings after the completion of the NCAA Division III nationals weekend on Saturday. The men placed last.
Sophomore Katelyn Strauss placed fifth in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2;01.83.
The St. Thomas women’s 200 freestyle relay team placed tenth with a time of 1;33.09.
