Women’s soccer loses championship title to Augsburg

Marta Anderson’s goal 15 minutes into the game gave Augsburg a 1-0 victory Saturday over St. Thomas in the MIAC women’s soccer championship game played on the Tommies’ South Campus field.

Anderson received the ball 30 yards from the goal off of St. Thomas’ poor clearing pass and found the top corner of the goal, with the ball deflecting off Tommie goalkeeper Tarynn Theilig. Augsburg recorded five shots with three on goal. The Tommies recorded nine shots with six on goal but with none finding the back of the net.

The Tommies (10-0-1 MIAC, 17-2-1 overall) went into the game with only four goals scored against them throughout the season. Anderson’s goal was the second this season scored on St. Thomas by the Auggies. Augsburg (8-3, 17-4) also scored against St. Thomas in a 2-1 loss in the last regular season game for both teams.

The Tommies, currently ranked second in the North region, will have to wait until selection Monday to find out if they will receive an NCAA bid. Augsburg, currently ranked fourth in the North region, will receive the automatic bid for winning the MIAC championship.

Sophomore forward Mallory DeBoom, recorded two shots on Saturday, both of which were on goal. DeBoom leads the Tommies in both goals (9) and assists (7). DeBoom has also recorded six game winning goals for the Tommies this season.

“As a team we still had plenty of time to keep fighting for the win,” DeBoom said. “We were definitely creating chances in the final third it was just the question of who was going to step up and put in the extra effort.”

DeBoom felt the team lacked a bit of heart this game and believe if they were to get an NCAA bid they would have to improve on that.

“If anything a lesson can be taken from this game,” DeBoom said. “We just need to be able to show up to play and put our hearts into the game because from here on out it could be our last game of the season.”

The selection show is scheduled for Monday the 7th of November at 12:30pm.
