The St. Thomas women’s tennis team lost 7-2 against the Carleton Knights Saturday at University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.

With the loss, St. Thomas (7-3 MIAC, 11-4 overall) ends the regular season on a two match losing streak. The Knights (10-0 MIAC, 16-2 overall) have now won eight consecutive matches.

The Tommies competed hard in doubles, but only managed to win one out of three doubles points. Junior twins Paige and Taylor McLeod won their No. 2 doubles match. In singles action, the Tommies had many close matches, but were not able to secure victories. The sole victory for the Tommies came from Taylor Jackson at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Although tennis is an individual sport, Taylor McLeod knows it is important to put the team aspect first.

“I got to play doubles with my twin sister. We just went out and had fun,” McLeod said. “We just played for the team and pulled it out. It was good to get that doubles point going into singles.”

Coach Terry Peck said playing the No. 1 ranked team in the MIAC will prepare the Tommies well for postseason play.

“In tennis, you like to be playing top teams so you get your game up. I’m real happy the way our schedule finishes out here,” said Peck. “We have the talent to be a top 25 team in the country.”

Although the Tommies ended the regular season with a loss, Taylor Jackson knows it’s important to put that behind them.

“We’ve had a couple tough losses this season. We’re going to have to play the same team again hopefully in the postseason,” said Jackson. “I think everyone is motivated now after tonight to beat (Carleton).

The Tommies will compete again in the MIAC playoffs starting May 1. Their opponent is yet to be determined.
