Softball splits games with Blazers
Though pitcher Kendra Bowe allowed just two runs and tallied nine strikeouts in seven innings of work, the St. Thomas softball team lost the first game of a doubleheader against the College of St. Benedict 2-1 before rebounding to beat the Blazers 6-0 in the second game.
The loss ends the Tommies’ 47-game home win streak and is their first conference loss since 2012. St. Thomas’ 6-0 win in the second game gave coach John Tschida his 750th career win, making him just the eighth Division-III coach to reach that milestone.
Blazer Kelsey McQuillan’s two-run double in the third inning gave St. Ben’s all it needed to win Sunday afternoon. St. Thomas responded with a run in the fourth inning, but couldn’t muster another run to match St. Ben’s. The Tommies left six runners on base and managed just five hits.
In the second game, St. Thomas scored once in the second inning and twice in the fourth to grab a 3-0 lead before adding three runs in the sixth for the 6-0 victory. Pitcher Kate Jo Delisle did not allow a runner to get on base in four innings of work before pitcher Annie Boyer relieved her. Delisle got the win and Boyer earned a save.
Designated hitter Brenna Walek went 3-for-3 at the plate with three home runs and all six of the team’s RBIs.
The Tommies will host Hamline Monday and Macalester Wednesday afternoon.
Women’s tennis wins two 
The St. Thomas women’s tennis team earned a pair of 9-0 victories against Hamline and St. Mary’s during the weekend to extend its win streak to 12 meets.
The Tommies won all six singles matches against Hamline in straight sets to improve to 6-0 in MIAC play. St. Thomas came back with another dominating performance Sunday against St. Mary’s to earn a 7-0 in the conference and its seventh consecutive 9-0 victory.
St. Thomas, Carleton and Gustavus are now the only three teams that remain unbeaten in MIAC competition. The Tommies will travel to Northfield to face Carleton Saturday in their only meet this week.
Baseball to play three doubleheaders this week
The St. Thomas baseball team’s Saturday doubleheader against Hamline was rescheduled to be played Monday at the University of Minnesota’s Siebert Field.
After postponing a March 29 series against St. Mary’s, Saturday’s doubleheader is the second St. Thomas has had to reschedule so far this season. St. Thomas opened its MIAC season Wednesday with a win against Macalester, but the second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness. The Tommies led the Scots 4-1 after seven innings of play in the second game, and the date on which the last two innings will be played is yet to be announced.
St. Thomas is now scheduled to play three doubleheaders this week. After the series against Hamline on Monday, the Tommies are scheduled to host Gustavus Tuesday before playing Wis.-Stout at home on Saturday.
