MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – Behind forward Maddie McGlade’s two goals, the St. Thomas women’s hockey team defeated Bethel University 3-0 Friday night at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.

The Tommies (9-7-3 overall, 8-1-3 MIAC) won their second consecutive game and dominated all night, out-shooting the Royals 42-20. After a scoreless first period, McGlade put the Tommies on top with a rebound goal, and the team never looked back.

“I think the puck bounced our way. We got lucky on a few shots,” McGlade said. “(My goals) weren’t fantastic plays. They went in. We were going hard, winning battles in the corner.”

Six minutes later, McGlade added her second goal of the night and ninth of the season off of an interception on the forecheck, beating Bethel netminder Michelle Kilmstra with a backhand shot.

“The move was OK, but the shot wasn’t that great,” McGlade said. “I mean, the move was prettier than the goal.”

It wasn’t all positives for the Tommies Friday night. The team went 0-for-5 on the power play. Coach Tom Palkowski said he was happy with the puck movement but said the team just couldn’t finish.

“We moved it well. We had a lot of good shots. I was pleased with the way we moved it. We just didn’t bury it,” Palkowski said.

On the other side of special teams, the Tommies’ penalty kill was a strong point against the Royals. St. Thomas killed all three penalties called against it and had scoring chances short-handed because of a good forecheck.

“It’s been a focus for us the last couple weeks. We struggled a little bit. In the last few years we’ve been one of the top teams in the country in killing,” Palkowski said.

The Tommies sealed the victory late in the third period with a goal from defender Tori Bailey shortly after a power play expired.

St. Thomas goalie Taylor Neisen earned her second shutout of the season, stopping all 20 shots she saw. With the win, Neisen moves to 4-4-1 on the season.

“I think overall it was a really fun game. Everybody was flowing right from the start,” Neisen said. “I kind of knew from the puck drop it was going to be a really fun, solid effort by our whole team. We have had some rocky moments (on defense) throughout the season … They were very solid in front of me (tonight).”

The Tommies play the Royals again at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota.
