In a tight game from start to finish, the St. Thomas men’s club ultimate frisbee team defeated Macalester College 15-12 Saturday night at Macalester Stadium.
Though St. Thomas led 7-4 at halftime, Macalester worked its way back to 12-10 by capitalizing on St. Thomas’ errors. Although St. Thomas never trailed in the game, momentum shifted back and forth throughout the contest.
“You really have to give credit to them because they were really capitalizing on our mistakes … so we can’t just really look at every mistake that happens and look to blame ourselves, sometimes you just have to give them credit,” senior Ethan Rasmussen said.
As the two rivals squared off, it was easy to see tempers flaring on the field as physicality increased throughout the night.
“Ultimate is a self-officiating sport, so players work it out between them, so it always stays on the field. It shouldn’t get that hot, but seeing that we’re rivals, we both wanted to beat each other so badly,” senior Kyle Smith said.
After placing sixth in Division-III North Central Regionals and beating rival Macalester, St. Thomas wraps up its spring schedule and looks forward to the fall.
“This is peak for us. We really struggled early on in the year … so Macalester really showed us where we’ve gotten over the year,” Smith said.
