Golf teams in action over the weekend

The women’s golf team took fifth out of 20 teams at the Division-III Classic this weekend while the men’s team finished 11th out of 20 teams at the St. John’s University Invite.

The Tommie women battled through the absence of injured senior All-American Laura Heck to post a team score of 659. St. Thomas finished 31 strokes behind tournament champions Gustavus. The Tommies had only four players, so the score for every golfer for both rounds were counted. Senior Amy Anderson led the Tommies with a 156, which was good enough to tie for fifth in the entire field.

Intramural football starts tonight with kicking contest

The St. Thomas intramural football league will “kick off” its season with a field goal contest at 5 p.m. on Palmer Field.

The event is open to all faculty and students who are not members of the varsity or junior varsity teams. Anyone looking to enter the contest should report to the field before 5 p.m. to sign up.

Heart procedure can’t keep Ricky Margarit off the field

After a six-overtime defeat at St. Olaf last season, the Tommies are looking to avenge that loss this Saturday at home against the Oles (2-0).

Two players who are excited to play together for the first time in front of the home crowd are brothers Tony Margarit, a fifth-year senior, and sophomore Ricky Margarit.

“We have always played backyard football, backyard basketball and stuff, but we never got to play in a competitive environment with each other,” Tony Margarit said.

Women’s soccer starts MIAC season 1-0

When the St. Thomas women’s soccer team opened its conference season last year, the women were underdogs to win the conference title. This season, St. Thomas opened its title defense with a 3-0 win against St. Catherine University at home Wednesday afternoon.

“We came out with intensity,” coach Sheila McGill said. “We played as a team.”

Intramural football not just for men anymore

The popular student-run intramural football league is set to be back on campus this fall. Registration is open for the six-on-six two-hand-touch league, which will play its games at O’Shaughnessy stadium from 7 to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and even some Sundays.
