Freshman class is largest in school history
As of the 10th day of classes, there are 1,352 freshmen enrolled at St. Thomas – the largest class the university has ever seen.
“We took a close look at what we had available in terms of space and what size of class we can enroll and still keep the quality of the experience as high as we can,” said Marla Friederichs, associate vice president for admissions and financial aid.
St. Paul College reopens after gun scare
St. Paul Technical College reopened late Wednesday afternoon after St. Paul police searched the building for an alleged gunman.
H1N1 cases almost doubled since last week
According to McDermott, the number of new cases range between one and 13 per day, and the majority are from students who do not live on campus.

New billing system causes confusion
The day comes every semester. Students line up in Aquinas Hall, write out a check, and pay their tuition bill.
University of St. Thomas sophomore Lauren Uhl processes payments at the Career Development Center, but one payment she forgot about, was her tuition bill.
“I’m mad about it because it’s not like I couldn’t pay this installment, I just forgot,” said Uhl.
Now she wonders how much of a late fee she will have to pay.
“Which is money I didn’t need to pay,” said Uhl.
Paintball club and COMES get nod from USG
Council on Middle Eastern Studies (COMES) and the Paintball Club both received unanimous approval from USG and are now official student organizations.

Brazile stresses unity, fighting injustice
St. Thomas students, faculty and members of the surrounding community filled the O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium Monday night to hear Donna Brazile speak about the importance of mutual respect and unity in today’s world.
About 600 people came to listen to the CNN political contributor, ABC News consultant and veteran Democratic political strategist. Brazile came to campus for the CommUNITY series, which offers events and discussions to promote creating “a socially and intellectually conscious community.”

Foam cups, trays could soon be history
As buzz words like “green” and “sustainability” continue to gain popularity and momentum among universities nationwide, St. Thomas student clubs and campus services will strive to make a more environmentally conscious campus this year.
Spinach recall does not affect St. Thomas
The Salinas Valley distributor’s recall on “Queen Victoria” spinach because of salmonella concerns does not affect St. Thomas.
The recall is for two brands of bundled spinach that were harvested and sold to retailers in Minnesota, 11 other states and Canada between Sept. 1-3.
Hundreds gather to celebrate end of Ramadan
More than 250 St. Thomas students and community members gathered Thursday evening in Murray-Herrick Campus Center to celebrate the end of the Ramadan fast.
“It’s been a great event. This year is the largest turnout they’ve ever had partially because they’ve decided to invite more people,” theology club president Bridget Kapler said. “They’ve started to ask all of the clubs [and] all of the religious organizations on campus [to attend].”
