Holiday travelers in the Midwest braced for snow and ice from a storm Friday that was expected to deliver a rare white Christmas to Nashville before rolling into the Northeast. A day after the most densely populated parts of the county got a break from the weather, several inches of snow were expected across parts of the heartland. The Census Bureau reported Tuesday that Minnesota’s population grew 7.8 percent — to 5.31 million — from 2000 to 2010. The nation as a whole grew faster, however, at 9.7 percent to 308.7 million.

A St. Thomas student was killed in a house fire on the 1700 block of Selby Avenue Saturday morning, according to Doug Hennes, vice president of university relations.
The student, 20-year-old sophomore Michael Larson from Woodbury, was sleeping on a couch when the fire broke out, and he was dead by the time firefighters arrived and broke down the door, Hennes said. The house, at 1795 Selby Ave., is next to the Blue Door Pub.
