The Tommies beat Carleton 9-1, 6-5 in the team’s season-opening doubleheader at home, thanks to strong pitching by senior Cassie Smith. St. Thomas’ next game is against Augsburg Tuesday on the road.

The Tommies, led by senior Tyler Nicolai’s 28 points, beat Augustana 72-56 Saturday in the NCAA Division III Elite Eight in Rock Island, Ill.
