St. Thomas is still recovering from the snowstorm that hit campus this past weekend. The National Weather Service reported about 17 inches of snow fell in the Twin Cities during the weekend storm.
Students organize fundraiser for fire survivors, memorial service for Larson Friday on campus
A group of St. Thomas students has organized a special benefit night Wednesday at Davanni’s on Cleveland and Grand avenues to help the student survivors of the house fire that killed Michael “Carson” Larson Saturday, Dec. 11.
Increased enrollment in foreign languages at St. Thomas follows national trend
College students across the nation are taking more foreign language classes, and St. Thomas students are following the trend.
A Modern Language Association study found enrollment in foreign language courses increased 6.6 percent between 2006 and 2009.
USG releases tobacco-free student survey results
The Undergraduate Student Government discussed its tobacco-free survey results at its meeting Sunday.
2011 Tommie Award finalists named
Seniors Daniel Carr, Nick Kor and Miles Trump have been named as the finalists for the 2011 Tommie Award. Students, faculty and staff voted on the three finalists out of 21 nominees earlier this week.

USG approves $2,500 stage rental for PULSE, other club requests
The Undergraduate Student Government approved financial expenses for clubs and organizations at its meeting Sunday night, including $2,500 for a stage for PULSE’s holiday performance.
USG usually does not fund a lot of programming, Scharine said.
21 seniors nominated for the Tommie Award, profiles of the candidates
Twenty-one St. Thomas seniors are nominated for the 2011 Tommie Award.
Preliminary voting for the Tommie Award will be available online from Dec. 6 to Dec. 9.
Voting is open to all St. Thomas students, faculty and staff. Ballots can only be accessed online with a St. Thomas log-in. All voters will receive an e-mail with voting instructions, Klobassa said.
Music practice rooms overcrowded due to growing programs
Music practice rooms in Brady Educational Center have seemed more crowded this semester, according to some music students.
2010 Tommie Award nominee: Clare Naughton
Clare Naughton, international studies major, renaissance program minor, 3.50 GPA
Naughton is from St. Paul, Minn. Her main activities at St. Thomas include being on the crew team, helping with events for Students for Justice and Peace, working as a Catholic Studies Intern and working for Residence Life.
2010 Tommie Award nominee: Paul Solomon
Paul Solomon, philosophy and Catholic studies major, 3.29 GPA
Solomon is from Wheaton, Ill. At St. Thomas, he is a St. John Vianney resident adviser, Last Chance Mass assistant and the principle organizer of “Caruso’s Crew.”

Matthew Deutsch, mechanical engineering major, 3.77 GPA
Deutsch is from Spring Valley, Wis. His activities include Air Force ROTC, fraternity of St. Michael the Archangel, Chamber Singers, cantor at Mass on campus, Christian Leaders Club, Student Spirituality Committee, Junior Class Senator, Black Knights Drill Team, Swing Dance Club, Arnold Air Society, Valor Bible Study, Detachment 410 Choir, Delta Epsilon Sigma and Aquinas Scholars Honors Program.

Kristy Elsen, leadership and management and business communications major
Elsen is from Champlin, Minn. Her leadership positions include working as the Flynn Hall operations manager, Residence Hall Association president, and Undergraduate Student Government RHA representative. She is on the National Residence Hall Honorary, Registrar Committee, Beverage Funds Committee and Judicial Hearing Board as a student representative.
