The old adage “respect your elders” got a new twist Saturday as St. Thomas’ seniors led the men’s basketball team to a 78-70 win over Illinois-Wesleyan in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

The men’s basketball team defeated visiting Illinois-Wesleyan 78-70 in the second round of the NCAA championships Saturday. St. Thomas will play Wisconsin-Stevens Point Friday.

St. Thomas will enter the NCAA tournament for the sixth consecutive year, but its opponent, the Northwestern Eagles, have never been to “The Dance.”
St. Thomas-Augsburg fitness challenge under way
The second annual “Auggies vs. Tommies Fitness Challenge” started last week. St. Thomas staff and faculty are trying to reclaim the title from Augsburg in the nine-week competition.

One of the main reasons students are having to print more is because faculty members are putting class readings on Blackboard that were once purchased in the bookstore or handed out in class.

Steve Fritz, athletic director and men’s basketball coach, was the recipient of the 1971 “Mr. Tommy” Award, now known as the Tommie Award. This year’s recipient will be the 81st in school history.

Women’s hockey blanks St. Olaf 4-0
The women’s hockey team took the lead in the first minute and never gave it up as St. Thomas cruised to a 4-0 conference win against St. Olaf Friday. The Tommies improved to 5-3-1 on the season, including a 5-1-1 conference record.
Caruso named Regional Coach of the Year
St. Thomas football coach Glenn Caruso has been named a Regional Coach of the Year.
The American Football Coaches Association named Caruso and five other Division III coaches award recipients Monday.

Football heads into second playoff round hoping to avenge last year’s loss
It’s not too often in sports that you get a second chance, but St. Thomas will have exactly that Saturday.
With a 57-10 rout of Benedictine last weekend, the Tommies advanced to the second round of the NCAA playoffs where they will face a familiar foe: Linfield College.
