Rule adds another year for MIAC redshirt transfers

In a change handed all the way down from the NCAA presidential level, the MIAC must now honor the extra year of eligibility granted to students who redshirted when transferring into the conference from Division I and Division II schools.

Redshirting refers to when players are allowed to practice with a team but do not participate in NCAA competition, and therefore maintain that year’s worth of eligibility. All NCAA athletes are allowed four years of eligibility, and until this change was made, student-athletes who transferred into the MIAC after redshirting lost that year’s worth of eligibility.

D3Football.com selected St. Thomas’ offensive line for Division III Team of the Week after an exceptional performance Sept. 19 against St. Olaf. The offensive line helped push the Tommie run game to 201 yards on the ground, including two touchdowns for junior running back Ben Wartman.

Women’s soccer still undefeated in MIAC

The women’s soccer team ran its conference unbeaten streak dating back to last season to 15 games with a 5-0 win Wednesday at Hamline. The win is St. Thomas’ fourth in a row, moving the team to 6-2 on the year and 3-0 in MIAC play.

Intramural football kicked off with Thompson’s 45-yard boot

For many sports fans, the kickoff between the Pittsburg Steelers and Tennessee Titans marked the beginning of their favorite time of the year: football season. At St. Thomas, the real start to the season isn’t the NFL’s first game or even the opening game for the Tommie varsity football team.

The real season started Monday, Sept. 21 with the field goal kicking contest that “kicked off” the annual intramural football league. Freshman Jeff Thompson won the contest with a field goal of 45 yards.

Golf teams in action over the weekend

The women’s golf team took fifth out of 20 teams at the Division-III Classic this weekend while the men’s team finished 11th out of 20 teams at the St. John’s University Invite.

The Tommie women battled through the absence of injured senior All-American Laura Heck to post a team score of 659. St. Thomas finished 31 strokes behind tournament champions Gustavus. The Tommies had only four players, so the score for every golfer for both rounds were counted. Senior Amy Anderson led the Tommies with a 156, which was good enough to tie for fifth in the entire field.

Intramural football starts tonight with kicking contest

The St. Thomas intramural football league will “kick off” its season with a field goal contest at 5 p.m. on Palmer Field.

The event is open to all faculty and students who are not members of the varsity or junior varsity teams. Anyone looking to enter the contest should report to the field before 5 p.m. to sign up.

The popular student-run intramural football league is set to be back on campus this fall. Registration is open for the six-on-six two-hand-touch league, which will play its games at O’Shaughnessy stadium from 7 to 10 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and even some Sundays.
