Marty’s last-minute goal leads men’s soccer over Moorhead

First-year midfielder George Marty scored the only goal Wednesday at South Field to lead the St. Thomas men’s soccer team to a home victory against Concordia-Moorhead.

The first half of the rainy game consisted of back and forth possession between the Tommies (4-2-1 MIAC, 9-3-1 overall) and Cobbers (0-6 MIAC, 4-8 overall), and the Tommies knew at halftime changes had to be made.

“The hard part about halftime was we wanted to be urgent, but we wanted to be calm,” coach Jon Lowery said.

Marty scored his first goal of the season in the 89th minute of play from a pass by forward Jonathan Acevedo, securing the 1-0 win for the Tommies.

“I saw there was 40 seconds left on the clock, so I was like, I might as well make one more run,” Marty said. “(Acevedo) played a perfect ball in and I just got lucky enough to hit it in the back of the net.”

The Tommie offense had 15 shots on goal and nine corner kicks. The Cobbers were limited to one shot on goal and one corner kick for the entire game.

“It’s hard to score goals, but Jonny was great and George Marty is unbelievable,” Lowery said. “I have to remind the guys that we are young and how hard it is to win in conference. I think we saw first hand that lesson in action today.”

With the next two games on the road in non-conference play, Lowery thinks the break from the MIAC will be good for the team to work on different combinations and lineups.

“We still have so much to figure out and this weekend is a great opportunity to do that out of conference,” Lowery said. “Our goal is to be peaking early November, and with these games on the road it gives the guys a formative experience of how to win college soccer games.”

The Tommies head to Northwestern to play a non-conference game against the Eagles (2-5-1 UMAC, 4-8-1 overall) Friday.
