No charges filed in Flynn Hall shooting

The Ramsey County Attorney’s office declined to file charges against the St. Thomas student who accidentally discharged a gun in his Flynn Hall apartment, striking his roommate in the head.

The attorney’s office was not immediately available for comment.

St. Paul Police Public Information Officer Mike Ernster said the 22-year-old male student who accidentally fired the shot was trying to store the gun at the time. The roommate was transported to Regions Hospital for surgery and was expected to make a full recovery.

Ernster also confirmed that other guns “legally in his possession and located in cases” were recovered from the student’s car in this incident.

St. Thomas spokesperson Janet Swiecichowski confirmed in an email that the student who owned and discharged the firearm is still not on campus. She also said that university administrators are having discussions around the university’s weapon’s policy, but that it would be premature to comment on the possible outcome of those conversations.

Swiecichowski could not comment on the status of the university’s separate investigation into the incident.
