Students take the stage for ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ event

Originally only two competitors signed up, but five performances took the stage at STAR’s “So You Think You Can Dance” competition Thursday night.

With everything from swing dancing to dubstep, students flocked to Scooter’s for a night of flips, tricks and jazzy tunes.

STAR programmer sophomore Meghan Fischer planned the event so Tommie dancers could have a similar experience as musicians who performed at “Tommie Cover” events in the past.

“It (Tommie Cover) focused on … musical talent, so I wanted to find something that could give all the dancers a chance to show that off,” Fischer said.

The first place winners were freshmen Casey Nightingale and Gavan Winkels for their swing dance number. Scooter’s employee junior Alyssa Hewes said she had a blast watching it while working her shift.

“I thought (the swing dance) was cool,” Hewes said. “Especially since they just did it without being entered into the competition. Obviously they’ve practiced before … so it was really cool to see all the flips and tricks they did.”

Fischer noted that though “So You Think You Can Dance” and St. Thomas’ PULSE show are similar concepts, she never expected her event to have as much popularity as PULSE.

“I know (at) PULSE, they work on it all semester long,” Fischer said. “This is just kind of something where a student or a group of students could just throw something together and perform it.”
