There is a lot of merchandise in the Tommie Shop, located in the Anderson Student Center, but next door, in the Summit Marketplace, is a new St. Thomas item that will keep students and visitors energized.
St. Thomas branded coffee is available in a bean or grind form either in a purple or silver bag for $9.99 on the shelves in Summit Marketplace.
Mark Vangsgard, St. Thomas vice president of business affairs, said it was easy to get the coffee to have the St. Thomas label and profits will go in two places when consumers buy.
“For every order from the distributor, there is 25 cents per bag that goes directly to athletics,” Vangsgard said. “Then the balance of the money goes to food service as part of auxiliary income.”
Regular coffee drinker sophomore Bailey Otis said that she would consider buying the St. Thomas brew.
“I would buy it,” Otis said. “I’d give it a whirl.”
Otis also said that having the St. Thomas option on campus for coffee would help her caffeine craving.
“If I didn’t drink coffee, no one would want to deal with me,” Otis said.
Vangsgard said the deal for the coffee seemed to make sense from a business standpoint.
“It’s just part of St. Thomas’ entrepreneurial spirit,” Vangsgard said. “I mean, why not? If somebody has a good idea that makes sense, raises it to the right person, then maybe the seed will grow.”

How was this story filed under “news” and not “diversions.” For that matter, has anyone else noticed that roughly 85% of the “news” stories on Tommie Media are fluff pieces? Is there no serious work going on around this place?
If you like 300% markup on a commodity like coffee, than St. Thomas brew is right for you!
Mike, How about; UST Public Safety writes lots of parking tickets with 10% off coupon attached, parking is a problem at UST unless you buy a pound of coffee beans, some neighbors don’t like St.Thomas even though they get free coffee, or no tennis courts on campus but you can play with UST beans on any table. Sorry, That’s not news to any UST student. Hey Mark V.. Build some tennis courts and rent them out during the summer and make some money. Bonus, Sell a coffee energy drink at the courts.
