Jimmie Mattson nailed a 25-yard field goal with 5 seconds remaining Saturday to give St. John’s a 27-24 the home upset of No. 19 St. Olaf, spoiling the Oles’ playoff hopes.

St. John’s (5-4, 4-3 MIAC) turned the ball over on its first four possessions, twice inside the 20-yard line, and trailed 17-0 midway through the second quarter. Then Mattson hit a 31-yard field-goal try 7 minutes, 32 seconds before the half to launch St. John’s on a 24-point run.

The rally included a 31-yard scoring pass from Ben Krebsbach to Wade Powers and two Stephen Johnson touchdowns, the second from 27 yards out to give the Johnnies a 24-17 lead.

Leon Clark scored his third touchdown of the game on an 8-yard run with 1:54 left in the fourth quarter to tie it for St. Olaf (7-2, 5-2 MIAC). The Oles forced St. John’s to turn the ball over on downs, but the Johnnies’ punt hit a St. Olaf player, and St. John’s recoverd on its own 43-yard line.

Quarterback Connor Bruns, out of the game since the second quarter, returned to lead St. John’s on a nine-play, 49-yard drive to set up the winning field goal.

Johnson carried 38 times for 196 yards, and Johnnies wide receiver Brent Graboski caught five passes for 142 yards.

St. John’s ends its season next Saturday at Hamline. St. Olaf is at home against Concordia.

Bethel 22, Hamline 6

Hamline’s Nate Sarrazin picked up a Bethel fumble and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown with 7 minutes to go in the first quarter, giving the Pipers the early lead, but Bethel quarterback Josh Aakre took over from there.

Aakre ran for three touchdowns and passed for another as Bethel (7-2, 5-2) dominated at home and kept Hamline (0-8, 0-6) winless.

After Sarrazin’s touchdown, Aakre capped an 83-yard drive with a 62-yard scoring strike to Reese Walker with 16 seconds left in the first quarter. Aakre ran for touchdowns of 9 and 16 yards, then finished the day with a 78-yard scoring dash with 7:37 left in the fourth quarter.

Jesse Phenow scored Bethel’s final touchdown.

Bethel finishes its season next Saturday against Augsburg in the Metrodome.

Augsburg 37, Gustavus 20

Jerise Washington ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter and added another in the fourth quarter to lead Augsburg (6-3, 4-3) to the victory at Gustavus Adolphus (1-8, 1-6).

Marcus Brumm completed 20 of 32 passes for 221 yards, with two passes going to Adam Carl for touchdowns. Carl caught 11 passes in all for 115 yards.

Jeffrey Dubose ran for two touchdowns for the Gusties.
