Tyler Swanson caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Brumm with no time left in the fourth quarter as Augsburg drove 80 yards in 18 seconds to win at St. John’s for the first time since 1980 and spoil the Johnnies’ homecoming.

St. John’s (2-2, 1-1) had taken a 31-26 lead with three consecutive touchdowns. Nick Schneider ran for touchdowns of 2 and 5 yards to make it 26-24 Augsburg with 9:43 to play in the third quarter. The Johnnies didn’t score again until Sam Pederson caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Connor Bruns with 23 seconds to play, making it 31-26.

The Auggies (3-0, 2-0 in the MIAC) got the ball back on thier own 20 with 18 seconds to go. Brumm hit Wesley Watashek with a 48-yard pass, then threw to incompletions. Then came the winning pass to Swanson, who caught six passes for 147 yards. Brumm completed 26 of 42 passes for 401 yards with no interceptions.

Augsburg led 13-10 after the first quarter, then scored twice in the second, with Brumm passing 9 yards to Waylon Hartwick and 21 yards to Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane with 3:15 to go before haltime for a 26-10 lead.

Augsburg outgained St. John’s 529-408. Tyler Maxwell led the Auggies with 103 yards rushing on 22 carries. St. Johns’ John Ries completed 19 of 27 passes for 226 yards.

Auggies take on Carleton next Saturday in Northfield. The Johnnie’s come to St. Paul to take on St. Thomas in O’Shaughnessy Stadium.

St. Olaf 44, Gustavus 26

St. Olaf quarterback Dan Dobson passed for 259 yards and four touchdowns, and ran 70 yards for another score in a home victory over Gustavus Adolophus.

Stephen Asp caught four of Dobson’s passes for 94 yards and two TDs.

St. Olaf (3-1, 1-1 in MIAC) took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Dobson passed 14 yards to Jake Schmiesing to cap a 10-play, 73-yard drive. Schmiesing finished the game with 81 receiving yards. Jason Obarski added a 35-yard field goal with 1:18 to play in the period.

Gustavus (0-3, 0-1 in MIAC) came back in the second quarter to lead 14-10 lead, but Dobson erased that with a 5-yard TD pass 15 seconds before the half ended.

Dobson passed for two touchdowns in the third quarter, then tucked the game away with his long scoring run with 12:53 left in the game.

Jeffery Dubose rushed for 60 yards and three touchdowns for the Gusties.

The Oles outgained the Gusties 555-330. St. Olaf linebacker Drew Eid led all defensive players with six solo tackles and an interception.

The Oles take on Bethel next Saturday in Arden Hills. The Gusties are at home against Concordria-Moorhead.

Carleton 34, Hamline 0

Junior quarterback Mike Hartwell ran for two touchdowns passed for two more as Carleton (1-1, 1-2) rolled in its homecoming game over Hamline (0-2, 0-3).

The Knights held Hamline to 145 yards of offense while gaining 326 yards, led by Hartwell. He rushed for 68 yards and completed 7 of 17 passes for 118 yards with no interceptions.

Harwell hit sophomore wide receiver Conor Lynch with a 21-yard scoring pass and sophomore tight end Brian Frett with a 38-yard TD pass.

Senior Eric Murphy kicked field goals of 26 yards and 27 yards for the Pipers.

Carleton takes on Augsburg next Saturday in Minneapolis.
