Some students think landline phones, including the phones the university provides to all students living in residence halls, are becoming outdated as more students are carrying cellphones.
“I’ve never used my landline. I tried to set it up, but I couldn’t figure it out,” freshman Lauren Mumm said. “It sits in the corner – it doesn’t do anything.”
Sophomore Vinnie Floeder is one exception. He uses a landline because he does not have a cell phone.
“I communicate fine with just using just [a] landline phone,” Floeder said.
Information Resources and Technology Vice President Sam Levy said most students on campus aren’t using the phones the university provides.
“What we found out some years ago is that students have made their choice,” Levy said. “They prefer the mobility aspect of cellular phones.”
Even though most students are following the cellular trend, Floeder said he will never give in.
“I think maybe I might have to get one if that landline was gone,” Floeder said. “Until that day happens, no way.”

I like use my cell most of the time but I like having my landline in the dorm. I use the landline for local calls. After all, it’s free and I can save on my anytime minutes. I like having the phone provided – after all, I’m paying enough for the room. I should get a landline with it.
