The St. Thomas women’s soccer team shut out Gustavus 3-0 in the MIAC home opener to move to (1-0, 4-0 overall) on the season.
Midfielder Kate Heimer put the ball in the corner of the net with three minutes left in the first half for the first goal of the game with Madeline Bomsta.
“We’ve had multiple scorers this year, which is one of our goals as a team,” Heimer said.
Heimer went on to assist goal number two in the second half.
Forward Tessa Trettel tapped the ball in with 24 minutes remaining in the game after the outnumbered goalkeeper came out too far.
Tommie midfielder/forward Kristen Epperly scored the final goal off a pass from Kaley Roberts.
Gustavus (0-1, 0-5 overall) drew energy early from multiple saves by goalkeeper Ashley Becker. In the previous game, Becker set the Gustavus school record in career saves.
“Our conference is super competitive,” Heimer said. “We always have to bring our A-game.”
The Tommies held possession for the majority of the game, which led to more shots on goal.
“Everyone steps up to the plate when it needs to be done,” Trettel said.
Epperly credits the team’s early success to an energetic, focused and supportive team dynamic.
The Tommies will face Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage College this weekend in Oshkosh, Wis.
