The St. Thomas women’s basketball team’s high energy led them to a 92-30 blowout win over the Carleton Knights Saturday at Schoenecker Arena.
The Tommies’ (7-0 overall, 3-0 MIAC) strong defense only allowed the Knights (3-6 overall, 0-3 MIAC) to score 21 points in the first half, and limited them to nine to finish the game.
Senior center Hannah Spaulding took advantage of getting the ball down in the paint, leading the team in scoring with 19 points and shooting 83 percent.
Senior guard Bobbi Brendefur had a memorable season debut, returning to the court after re-tearing a torn ACL injury within a 10 month period.
“It’s been 1,002 days to be exact since I played my last game, so this is an unreal feeling,” Brendefur said.
Brendefur shot 100 percent from the 3-point range and went 5-for-6 from inside the arc.
“I’ve been mentally ready and preparing for this so I wasn’t nervous when I went in,” Brendefur said.
Along with Brendefur’s season debut, a number of other players on the team earned their first varsity points.
Coach Ruth Sinn said it’s always neat when different players get a little limelight.
“Everybody works hard in practice and everybody makes each other better,” Sinn said. “A lot of the times they are in the shadows and don’t get the recognition.”
Continuous energy from the team showed on both ends the court. Notably, the Tommies shot 94.4 percent from the free throw line.
With the win, the Tommies extended their conference win streak to 57.
“I like that we had that renewed energy and renewed love,” Sinn said. “Teams that really enjoy what they are doing is what showed today.”
The Tommies will play Wednesday on the road against Concordia-Moorhead.
